HEAVEN ON THEIR MINDS (Judas)
[4/4, Chords played over the Eb-Cm-Dm-Eb-Cm progression/bass riff]
My mind is clearer now at last all to well
I can see where we all soon will be
If you strip away the myth from the man
You will see where we all soon will be
Jesus! You've started to believe the things they say of you
You really do believe this talk of God is true
And all the good you've done will soon get swept away
You've begun to matter more than the things you say
Listen Jesus I don't like what I see
All I ask is that you listen to me
And remember I've been your right-hand man all along
You have set them all on fire
They think they've found the new Messiah
And they'll hurt you when they find their wrong
I remember when this whole thing began
No talk of God then we called you a man
And believe me my admiration for you hasn't died
But ev'ry word you say today
Gets twisted 'round some other way
And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

in 7/8

Nazareth your famous son should have stayed a great unknown
Like his father carving wood he'd have made good
Tables chairs and oaken chests would have suited Jesus best
He'd have caused nobody harm -- no one alarm
back to 4/4]
Listen Jesus do you care for your race?
Don't you see we must keep in our place?
We are occupied -- have you forgotten how put down we are?
I am frightened by the crowd
For we are getting much too loud
And they'll crush us if we go too far
[back to 7/8, instrumental break repeating previous 7/8 bridge]

back to 4/4

Listen Jesus to the warning I give
Please remember that I want us to live
But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour
All your followers are blind
Too much heaven on their minds
It was beautiful but now it's sour
Yes it's all gone sour...
Dm - Bb, jam and ramble to end

EVERYTHING'S ALRIGHT (Mary, Jesus, Judas)

Mary

Try not to get worried, try not to turn on to problems that upset you oh
Don't you know everything's alright yes, everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try we'll get by so forget about all us tonight
Everything's alright, yes, everything's fine

Judas

Woman your fine ointment -- brand new and expensive
could have been saved for the poor
Why has it been wasted -- we could have raised maybe
Three hundred silver pieces or more
People who are hungry, people who are starving
Matter more than your feet and hair

Mary

Sleep and I shall soothe you, calm you and annoint you
Myrrh for your hot forehead oh
Don't you know everything's alright yes everything's fine
And it's cool and the ointment's sweet
For the fire in your head and feet
Close your eyes, close your eyes and relax, think of nothing tonight
Everything's alright, yes, everything's fine

Jesus

Surely you're not saying we have the resources
to save the poor from their lot?
There will be poor always, pathetically struggling
Look at the good things you've got!
Think! while you still have me
Move! while you still see me
You'll be lost
You'll be so so sorry
When I'm gone

Close your eyes, close your eyes and relax (repeat, repeat, et al)

HOSANNA (Crowd, Jesus, Caiaphas)

Crowd

Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho
Sanna Hey Sanna Ho Sanna
Hey J.C., J.C. won't you smile at me?
Sanna Ho Sanna Hey Superstar

Caiaphas

Tell this rabble to be quiet we anticipate a riot
Bb Bb(B5) Bb G
This common crowd is much too loud
Tell the mob who sing your song that they are fools and they are wrong
Bb Bb(B5) Bb G
They are a curse -- they should disperse

Crowd

Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho
Sanna Hey Sanna Ho Sanna
Hey J.C., J.C. you're alright by me
Sanna Ho Sanna Hey Superstar

Jesus

Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting
If every tongue was still the noise would still continue
The rocks and stones themselves would start to sing

Jesus & Crowd

Hosanna Heysanna Sanna Sanna Ho
Sanna Hey Sanna Ho Sanna
Hey J.C., J.C. won't you fight for me?
Sanna Ho Sanna Hey Superstar

PILATE'S DREAM (Pilate)

4/4

I dreamed I met a Galilean
A most amazing man
He had that look you very rarely find
The haunting, hunted kind
I asked him to say what had happened
How it all began
I asked again, he never said a word
As if he hadn't heard
And next the room was full
of wild and angry men
they seemed to hate this man
Db (tacet)
they fell on him and then
F7 (tacet)
they disappeared again
Then I saw thousands of millions
crying for this man
And then I heard them mentioning my name
And leaving me the blame

~Date: Thu, 14 Apr 1994 16:53:11 GMT
This post includes:
"I Don't Know How To Love Him"
"The Last Supper"
"I Only Want To Say (Gethsemane)"
and
"King Herod's Song"
These are sketchy and a little "thrown-together" because I don't have the
time to be more verbose... perhaps in the future... The songs that I
included are in the order that they appear in the show. All Jesus Christ
Superstar Music and Lyrics are by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. (C) 1970
by Leeds Music Limited.
Questions and comments welcome. I've done this show about a dozen times
in the past 15 years, and I pretty much know it inside and out.
-Jim (jloya@world.std.com)
I DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM (Mary Magdalene)
Note: The A9 in the last measure of each verse is actually an "A9sus (no
G)" Try fitting THAT over the word "else". Ah, limitations, limitations.
The chord is actually very easy to play if you use some untraditional
fingering/positioning across the progression of that line of the verse.

in 4/4

I don't know how to love him
What to do, how to move him
I've been changed, yes really changed
In these past few days when I've seen myself
I seem like someone else
I don't know how to take this
I don't see why he moves me
He's a man, he's just a man
And I've had so many men before
In ve - ry ma - ny ways
He's just one more

PSEUDOBRIDGE

Should I bring him down
Should I scream and shout
Should I speak of love
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this
G D/F# Em A9 - A
What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny
I should be in this position?
I'm the one who's always been
So calm, so cool, no lover's fool
Running every show
He scares me so
repeat pseudobridge, instrumental to "never thought I'd come to this..."
Yet if he said he loved me
I'd be lost, I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head, I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
I love him so

THE LAST SUPPER (Apostles)

verse 1

Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
Don't disturb me now
I can see the an - swers
Till this evening is this morning
Life is fine

verse 2

Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gos - pels
So they'll still talk a - bout us when we've died
Jesus/Apostles/Judas interludes, verse, dialogue
repeat verses 1 and 2
More Jesus/Judas interludes
repeat verse 1

verse 3

Look at all my trials and tribulations
Sinking in a gentle pool of wine
What's that in the bread?
It's gone to my he - ad
Till this evening is this morning
Life is fine
repeat verse 2, end on G
I ONLY WANT TO SAY (GETHSEMANE) (Jesus)
(IMHO this is probably THE most powerful piece in the entire show. A true
perfect blend of Lloyd-Webber and Rice at their finest! This is a
difficult tune to put into ASCII, mainly because the bulk of the piece is
arranged orchestral, and even on piano it's hard to capture the magic of
this work... here goes nothing... ad lib where deemed appropriate)

verse

I only want to say
If there is a way
Take this cup a - way from me
F F+ F Bbmsus Bbm Gb
For I don't want to taste its poison -- feel it burn me
I have changed, I'm not as sure as when we started
Then I was inspired
Now I'm sad and tired
Listen, sure - ly I've exceeded expectations
Bbmsus Bbm Gb
Tried for three years -- seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?

sub-verse

But if I die
See the saga through and do the things you ask of me
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree
I'd wanna know I'd wanna know my God (x2)
I'd wanna see I'd wanna see my God (x2)
Why I should die
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?
Would the things I've said and done matter any more?
I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord (x2)
I'd have to see I'd have to see my Lord (x2)

key change to C

If I die what would be my reward? (x2)
I'd have to know I'd have to know my Lord (x2)
Why should I die? Why should I die?
Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?
Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain
Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die
You're far too keen on where and how and not so hot on why

repeat Cm - Bb - Ab - G progression

Alright I'll die! Just watch me die!
See how I die! See how I die!
[Instrumental orchestra break in 5/8 -- Cm Bbsus Ab G]
[Break last round at Ab - Tacet - return to initial tempo in Cm]
Then I was inspired, now I'm sad and tired
After all, I've tried for three years seems like ninety
Why then am I scared to finish what I started
What you started -- I didn't start it
God, thy will is hard but you hold every card
I will drink your cup of poison
Nail me to your cross and break me, bleed me, beat me
Kill me -- take me now before I change my mind
KING HEROD'S SONG (Herod)

in 4/4

NOTE: The E6 floating about is actually an E6 (no B), and likewise
the F6 floating about is actually an F6 (no C), and likewise
the G6 floating about is actually a G6 (no D). Aren't key
changes wonderful? Feel like this is a Barry Manilow tune. :
Jesus I am overjoyed to meet you face to face
You've been getting quite a name all around the place
Healing cripples, raising from the dead
And now I understand you're God -- at least that's what you've said
So you are the Christ you're the great Jesus Christ
E6 E A (tacet)
Prove to me that you're divine -- change my water into wine
That's all you need do and I'll know it's all true
C'mon King of the Jews
Jesus you just won't believe the hit you've made 'round here
You are all we talk about, the wonder of the year
Oh what a pity if that's all a lie
Still I'm sure that you can rock the cynics if you try
So you are the Christ you're the great Jesus Christ
E6 E A (tacet)
Prove to me that you're no fool -- walk across my swimming pool
If you do that for me then I'll let you go free
C'mon King of the Jews
[Instrumental Break (follow chorus progression)]

key change

I only ask things I'd ask any superstar
What is it that you have got that puts you where you are?
I am waiting, yes I'm a captive fan
I'm dying to be shown that you are not just any man
So you are the Christ yes the great Jesus Christ
F6 F Bb (tacet)
Feed my household with this bread -- you can do it on your head
Or has something gone wrong? Why do you take so long?
C'mon King of the Jews

stop, mood shift

Hey! Aren't you scared of me Christ? Mister Wonderful Christ!
G6 G C (tacet)
You're a joke, you're not the Lord! You're nothing but a fraud!
Take him away he's got nothing to say
G6 B/G G7 (tacet)
Get out you king of the -- GET OUT!
Get out you king of the Jews!
Get out you king of the Jews!
Get out of my life!
