Verse 1

He’d been a cowboy out of Bozeman, for 37 years
He wore out seven saddles, two ex-wives and all his fears
But they sold the ranch last summer, to some billionaire back East
And the bureaucrats at BLM, ran ‘em off the lease
He never asked a thing from anyone but to just be left in peace

Verse 2

The bank foreclosed in April, so the cowboy hit the road
He only bought that damned old house for his second wife Sarah Jo
He looked for work out in the oil field, but they were only hiring young
So he fired up the F-150, pointed toward the morning sun
It was clear what the world was saying, but he wasn’t one to run

Verse 3

Saddlebags over his shoulder, he walked into D.C.
He went to meet his congressman, but there was no one he could see
He slept in the park for two more nights, with the homeless and the bums
He met an out of work longshoreman, shared a smoke and a bottle of rum

Chorus

The ballad of the last cowboy
The ballad of the last cowboy

Verse 4

He woke up Friday morning, put his bedroll in his bag
Walked to the Washington Monument, stood beneath the flags
The guard said they were closed today, the earthquake cracked the base
The cowboy said “that’s nothing man, compared to the coming days
And when he laid the guard out on the floor, the cowboy sealed his fate

Verse 5

He walked up those 900 steps, and when he reached the top
He looked out toward the Capital, and he saw 500 cops
Snipers up on every roof, SWAT teams on the ground
He opened up his saddlebag, he knew he wasn’t walking down
As he stepped to the open window, a sniper touched off a round

Verse 6

The bullet split the concrete beside the cowboy’s head
As he unfurled his banner, the second shot struck him dead
The TV cameras rolled the tape, and all the politicians said
It was a tragedy the way he died, unarmed in a hail of lead
They left his banner waving, FREEDOM was all it said

Chorus

The ballad of the last cowboy
The ballad of the last cowboy

Verse 7

The strangest thing about it, when they finally took him away
They couldn’t find him in the system, no number no card no name
No one came to claim the body, they found no next of kin
He was invisible to the system, away from all our sins
They buried him in a pauper’s grave, alone till the bitter end

Chorus

The ballad of the last cowboy
The ballad of the last cowboy
